JOHOR BARU: A total of 112,350 face masks worth about RM60,669 were seized by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry in a special operation here.
Johor ministry director Mohd Hairul Anuar Bohro said they raided three premises in Taman Sentosa and Tebrau in Johor Baru suspected of selling fake Neutrovis-branded face masks.
“Ten ministry enforcement officers along with a representative of the brand owner took part in the operation, which started at about 2pm on Saturday (July 24).
“Checks were conducted on the premises following a complaint from the brand owner. It is believed that the suspects have been using houses to store and distribute the face masks.
“A total of 112,350 face masks worth about RM60,669 were seized in the operation,” he said in a statement here.
He said ministry officials recorded statements from five individuals working at the premises and that further action would be taken under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
“Under the Act, a company can receive a maximum fine of RM250,00 for the first offence and maximum RM500,000 for repeated offences, if found guilty.
“For individuals, the offender could face a maximum of three years’ jail, or fined up to RM100,000, or both for the first offense and maximum of five years’ imprisonment, or RM250,000 fines, or both for repeated offences,” he said.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Neutrovis Malaysia told customers to be aware of the face masks they buy.
“Be wary of fake Neutrovis products in the market! Our value is to always prioritise our customers health and safety. We here at Neutrovis always strive to produce genuine and premium quality products for the well-being of our beloved customers,” said the company.
