50 tonnes of counterfeit products destroyed

The Commerce Ministry’s General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression in cooperation with the Interior Ministry’s Counter-Counterfeit Committee, on Saturday destroyed 50 tonnes of seized counterfeit products.

According to Consumer Protection spokesman Seng Thai, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court gave permission for authorities to burn and bury the counterfeit products which included fake sanitisers and methanol, poisoned red and white wines, and other chemicals.

Thai said that at least three people died recently from drinking wine with a high methanol content last month “Our authorities confiscated 347 plastic bags and 76 plastic containers equal to 4,275 litres as well as 358 kilogrammes of bad-quality food seized from markets and warehouses,” said Thai.

Banteay Meanchey provincial police chief Major General Sith Loh said that Consumer Protection officials and Counter-Counterfeit officers continue to inspect goods at markets and on Saturday confiscated drinks, cakes, candy and milk powder totalling 127.70 kilogrammes of pre-packaged food that they will schedule to burn as soon as possible.
