Customs flags over €58 million worth of counterfeit products in 2021

Customs Malta has flagged 12 cases of counterfeit transhipment containers and 65 other domestic cases so far in 2021.

Customs Malta has flagged 12 cases of counterfeit transhipment containers and 65 other domestic cases so far in 2021.

In a statement, the department said that in its continuous fight against counterfeit products entering the market, this year, 20 containers in transhipment were selected due to suspicious Intellectual Property Right (IPR) and 12 of them were in fact found to be carrying counterfeit goods, amounting to the total market value of €58,608,875. Footwear, electronics and toothpaste were amongst the fake products seized.

As for domestic products, 68 domestic consignments were selected due to suspicious IPR infringement. 65 of which were in fact found to be carrying counterfeit goods, amounting to the total market value of €359,840. Amongst these products were sunglasses, wristwatches and garments.

The highest number of items seized were clothing, amounting to 561,406 pieces (value of €8,415,900), while the highest in terms of value belonged to mobile accessories, with a net worth of €21,667,550 seized.
